Skin Care Basics - Step 2 - Tone

Updated: Apr 4

While toners were once harsh astringents aimed at shrinking pores and balancing oily skin, modern toners offer a broader range of benefits for various skin types. Here's why you might consider incorporating one into your skincare routine:

Cleansing:

  • Removes leftover residue: Even after cleansing, traces of makeup, dirt, and oil can linger. Toner acts as a second cleanse, gently sweeping away any missed impurities.

  • Refines pores: Toners with gentle exfoliating ingredients can help minimise the appearance of enlarged pores by removing dead skin cells and debris that clog them.

Skin prep:

  • Balances pH: Traditional toners aimed to restore the skin's natural pH after cleansing with harsher soaps. While modern cleansers are often pH-balanced, some toners still offer this benefit.

  • Boosts absorption: Certain toners contain humectants that attract and retain moisture, creating a plump and hydrated base for your moisturiser and other treatments, potentially enhancing their effectiveness.

Additional benefits:

  • Hydration: Many toners are alcohol-free and formulated with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerine, offering a refreshing boost of moisture, especially for dry or sensitive skin.

  • Targeted concerns: Toners come in various formulations targeting specific concerns like acne, redness, or brightening. Choosing one based on your skin's needs can offer additional benefits.

However, toners aren't essential for everyone. If you have a simple skincare routine and your cleanser removes makeup effectively, you might not need one. However, if you struggle with enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, or want to ensure maximum absorption of your moisturiser, incorporating a toner might be beneficial.

Tropics Toners

Morning Mist

Formulated with gentle ingredients to keep your skin’s pH-level balanced, this milky toning essence helps to maintain healthy barrier function, so your complexion stays moisturised and protected against environmental aggressors. Prepping and priming skin to function at its best, use it as a softening toner, a leave-on essence, a dewy finisher or a revitalising desk-side spritz whenever you need a pick-me-up throughout the day.

Juicy Greens

A juicy toning essence inspired by the traditions of Eastern beauty where natural, hydrating ingredients are expertly layered to help actives penetrate deep into the skin. Enriched with a dewy cocktail of polyhydroxy and alpha hydroxy acids to hydrate, gently exfoliate and improve the absorption of the products you apply afterwards, it’s expertly crafted for even the most sensitive skin types. Plus, if there’s any dirt and impurities you’ve missed when cleansing, this will mop them up with ease and leave you with smoother, more refined skin.

Remember, patch testing is crucial before introducing any new product to your routine. Apply a small amount behind your ear and wait 24 hours to check for any allergic reactions.

Ultimately, the decision to use a toner depends on your individual skin type, concerns, and preferences.

Consider your unique needs and give it a try to see if it makes a difference!
